The Balmain Bakery is a heritage listed 1880s sandstone terrace in the heart of Balmain. The house was unliveable when a former client requested we restore it. Their brief also included the addition of a contemporary structure to maximise space on the small, narrow and awkward shaped allotment. We worked closely with a stone mason to restore existing sandstone walls and lintels, and with carpenters to reinstate original windows and doors. The new addition was linked to the existing house by a glass and steel structure, detailed to enhance the difference between the new and the old. The glazing allowed natural illumination to the centre of the home without setting walls in from the boundaries and losing valuable space. The addition incorporated a modern kitchen and seamless access to the garden allowing the owner to fulfil his passion for cooking and entertainment.
